A staple down the middle in Calgary for nearly a decade, Mikael Backlund has proven to be one of the more consistently overlooked impact middle-6 centers. A good skater, Backlund is strong enough and fast enough to create time and space for himself to set up his teammates. He's able to reliably score 45 points per year with upside for 20 goals. He brings a responsible two-way game and is an asset on the penalty kill. His faceoff taking skills have been overrated by Selke voters, but he still is a capable centerman. Isolated impact metrics aren't as high on Backlund's defensive skills, showing him as only average in that department, but his reputation is too strong to dismiss. Backlund is a great third line shutdown center, or a fine second line pivot.
