MICHAEL DAL COLLE - Left Winger - 22 - Drafted 2014 #5 Overall
LAST UPDATED 1/16/19
Generally regarded as one of the largest draft busts in recent memory, Dal Colle has finally begun to show promise as a prospect for the first time in his professional career. Since his days as an OHL prospect, his skating has been his biggest issue, and while his skating is still behind where it needs to be for him to be a top-6 player, it has progressed to a low-end NHL-quality level. Dal Colle's biggest issue as a prospect is his inability to make an impact consistently. His hands and playmaking instincts are still very good, but his play away from the puck is too weak to allow him to survive in a bottom-6 defensive role. Despite being point-per-game in the AHL thus far in the 2018-19 season, his scoring has not translated to the NHL level which, if that trend becomes consistent, is a death sentence for him as a prospect. At this point, Dal Colle is very much in boom-or-bust territory, and if he can't translate his newfound AHL success to the NHL, he's destined for a Chris Terry/Seth Griffith-like career. But, if he can take his AHL success and score at a reasonable level in the NHL (~40-45 points with ~20 goals on a third line) he can be a useful middle-6 scorer. He's 22, so he's starting to enter his final "prime" years as a prospect, but given how hard he's worked to improve his skating and AHL performance, betting against him is a risky proposition.
