MATTHEW TKACHUK - Left Winger - 21 - RFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
After two impressive but not elite seasons in the NHL, Matthew Tkachuk exploded as a 21 year old, scoring 34 goals and posting an elite 77 points. His rise in shooting percentage to a completely unsustainable 16.4% suggests that some regression is in order, but even if he regresses a little bit Tkachuk has still established himself as one of the NHL's premier under-23 wingers. Tkachuk's game is based on his ability to play like sandpaper and get under his opponents' skin. He follows the trademark Tkachuk family trade of being a relentless power forward that will do anything it takes to get a leg up against his opponent. Tkachuk is a smart playmaker, a good skater, and a lethal shooter. He excels at winning battles for pucks and can reel off some booming open-ice hits. He's a very well-rounded player, capable of making a real impact on both ends of the ice and in front of the net on a power play. His skillset is best complemented with some puck moving defensemen and a playmaking center, but even without those teammates Tkachuk is talented enough to hold his own on a subpar line. Going forward, Tkachuk looks to be a staple nearthe top of the NHL's scoring (and penalty minute) leaderboards for the foreseeable future.
