MATT IRWIN - Defenseman - 31 - $.675MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Matt Irwin is a pretty standard, unremarkable depth defenseman. He's carved out a decent career for himself as a former undrafted player, but he's far from being anything of note at this point in his career. He's a decent skater, isn't undersized, and can help out with zone exits. Irwin isn't shy about the physical side of the game and can hold his own defensively against moderate competition with controlled minutes. There isn't one aspect of the game he's particularly weak at, but that also means he's a fairly boring defenseman as a result. He's fine, he can give you 10-15 fine minutes of hockey on a bottom pairing, but expecting more would cause Irwin's quality of play to dip a decent bit. At the cheap price Nashville is currently paying him, he has value as a seventh or sixth defenseman to plug into the lineup so that the team can allocate cap room to more pressing needs on the roster.
