MATT BENNING - Defenseman - 25 - $1.90MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/22/19
The nephew of Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning, Matt Benning has established himself as a quality NHL defenseman. As a former 6th round pick, he never quite excelled in any area, but he's an above-average puck mover and can help a team in their transition game. He sometimes makes little mistakes and isn't big enough or physical enough to win board battles/battles in front of the net reliably. What he can do, though, is play ~16 uncomplicated minutes of decent defensive hockey with plus puck movement. He doesn't have the tools to be a great point producer or a minute-eating defensive force, but he's smart enough and reliable enough to be a consistent, growing fifth or sixth defenseman.
