MATHIEU JOSEPH - Right Winger - 22 - $.728MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/21/19
Mathieu Joseph has been an elite scorer at every level he's played at, so while he only posted 26 points as a rookie, there is still far more to come with Joseph. Joseph was the victim of a stacked Tampa lineup, and therefore got far less offensive time (especially on the power play) than a typical high-scoring prospect would receive. That being said, Joseph made the best of his opportunities, and made his case for why he should be in Tampa's long-term plans for its top-6 once the cap really beats down on the Lightning's roster. Mathieu Joseph is a big winger with excellent puck skills and good speed. He's strong enough to be a difficult task for defenders when they need to strip the puck from him, and he's fast enough to create separation with the puck. Sometimes Joseph's mind can process things a step behind his wheels, and as a result he won't be able to take advantage of the separation he creates. That should correct itself as he gains more experience and matures, but right now it's something he needs to deal with. Joseph has a good shot but is also an underrated playmaker, and does have legitimate 30 goal upside. Joseph is also a great playmaker and has the puck possession skills and speed to be a self-starter on offense. I'm very high on Joseph's offensive potential, and I think that he has the tools to make me look good in projecting him so highly. Defensively, Joseph is also a work in progress but he has the speed, motor, and physicality to make an impact on that end of the ice, but he needs to learn to play with more awareness and urgency on a night-to-night basis in order to make himself into a true plus defensively. Right now Joseph is a skilled but raw middle-6 winger who has legitimate top-6 upside.
