MARTIN JONES - Goalie - 29 - $5.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2024-2025
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After two seasons as a capable, if underutilized backup in LA, Martin Jones finally seized a starting goalie job, this time in San Jose, where he led the Sharks to their first-ever Stanley Cup finals. Since that point, Jones has been a capable, but decently inconsistent starting goalie. Jones had issues this past season, and saw his sv% number that usually is a tick above .910 dip all the way below .900. Jones' GSAA, usually positive, was -22.87, an atrocious number. Is this Jones' real production from now on? I don't think so, but it is concerning. Jones has great size for a goalie, which allows him to square up to pucks and cover a lot of net when forwards are rushing at him. Jones moves with intent in the crease, and although he isn't the most athletic goalie he can make the desperation saves playoff goaltenders need to make. Some games he'll just be off, though, and this past season he let that inconsistency go on for far too long. If Jones is "on" mentally, he can be one of the best goalies in hockey, but he simply is not "on" enough to get there consistently. He's still a goalie you can probably rely on for 60 games, but be careful of getting seasons like 2018-19, because they happen when Jones is in a funk. Still, he's a good starting goalie with some upside and some definite consistency issues.
