MARTIN FRK - Right Winger - 25 - $.700MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 3/7/19
The 49th overall selection of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Frk had a lot of hype coming out of the QMJHL. However, his game took a while to develop, and Frk was claimed off of waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes for a month before being re-acquired by the Wings on waivers. While Frk is a physical player with league average skating ability, Frk’s shot is what really stands out from the rest of his game. Frk’s slapshot and wrister are both borderline elite, and he has proven to be a solid goal scorer at the AHL level. In the NHL, however, Frk has struggled to find shooting opportunities even when given second unit powerplay time, which seems to be due to his lack of NHL level offensive awareness. Given his struggles at the game’s highest level, it’s clear the Red Wings have begun to seriously consider whether Frk should be part of the team’s future, as he’s gone up and down between the Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins after playing a regular role in the bottom-6 during 2017-2018. At this rate, when considering Frk’s age (25) and disappointing NHL results, Frk seems to be destined for a 4th line or AAAA player role in the future.
