MARK STONE - Right Winger - 27 - $9.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2027-2028
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
Since he had his first point-per-game season, Mark Stone has been one of hockey's best all-around players. He's finished second in Selke voting for the past three straight seasons, and has not been left off of the Selke ballot at all since he broke into the league as a full-time NHL-er. Now, Selke voting alone isn't enough to get a sense of who's a good defensive forward, as there are some highly questionable votes every year, but in Stone's case the voting supports the overall record of defensive work he's presented in his career. Stone is just simply unbeatable in his own end. He's big, strong, and capable of being a force in the tough areas of the ice. He's also smart enough and quick enough to be a disruptive winger in his own end, and it's very tough to beat him or get by him alone. He's a suffocating defensive presence when he covers the puck carrier, and there are few players who can make as big of an impact killing penalties as a winger as Stone can. I could not praise Stone's defensive game highly enough, and I genuinely believe he is the best defensive forward in hockey, centers included. Offensively, Stone has really improved over the years. Whereas he used to "just" be a 60 or so point threat, he's now become a real point-a-game scorer. Stone plays hard on the puck and he's really difficult to rob, and that puck possession wizardry allows him the time and space he needs to create plays. Stone also has a great shot and should score 30+ goals when healthy. He's the complete offensive package, and that, combined with his incredible defensive play, makes him one of the game's most valuable wingers.
