MARK GIORDANO

MARK GIORDANO - Defenseman - 35 - $6.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023

LAST UPDATED 6/28/19
Giordano is one of the rare examples of a player getting better and better even as he progresses into his mid-30's. Always a skilled offensive producer but never a dominant force, Giordano broke out and scored 74 points in 78 games as a 35-year-old, en route to his first ever Norris trophy victory. He's got a tremendous shot and strong playmaking instincts, and can make stretch passes as well as carry the puck up the ice. He's an elite defender, also, and is capable of killing penalties as well as being an asset on the power play. He can match up against a team's toughest forwards for 25 minutes a night and be great. He's a true elite, complete #1 defenseman and combined with his excellent leadership skills there are few more valuable defensemen on a per-game level than Giordano. His contract may be a concern given its term and Giordano's age, but Gio's only gotten better as he's gotten older and it doesn't look like he's falling off a cliff anytime soon. His skating may regress, but he's still a smart enough and strong enough defender to make it work. An elite #1 defenseman and amazing person. Calgary is lucky to have him.
