MARIO KEMPE - Center - 30 - $.700MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/24/19
Kempe finally broke into the NHL as a 30 year old in 2018-19, but his time at the game's highest level suggests that Kempe is more of a AAAA tweener than a legit NHL regular. Kempe is a fantastic skater, with strong burst, edgework, and long speed, and he uses that speed to make an impact on offense and defense. Unfortunately for him, though, he lacks high-end puck skills and plus size, severely limiting his NHL upside. His speed and work ethic can only carry him so far, and while he fits as a fourth line jitterbug, his offensive upside is so poor that he'll need to prove he can kill penalties to stick, and he thus far has not proven an ability to do so. Isolated impact metrics are very high on Kempe's 5v5 defensive ability, and if that rings true, perhaps Kempe can be more than a jolt of adrenaline to a lineup as a 13th forward, but the sample size is too small for these numbers to hold any massive weight. Given his speed and underlying defensive ability, Kempe should get a shot in LA as a fourth line energy player, but once the season wears on and LA needs some goals, Kempe could feel the roster crunch as he simply lacks the offensive upside to be anything more than a fourth line plug.
