MARCUS FOLIGNO - Left Winger - 28 - $2.875MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/6/19
A casual fan may see Foligno's decently priced contract and his lackluster point production and infer that Foligno is an overpaid, negative-value asset. That would be a mistake. Foligno is the perfect example of why traditional hockey databases provide little in the way of actual information about a players' value. Yes, Foligno only scored 19 points last year. That's not great. But Foligno also is one of the game's best defensive wingers and most valuable penalty killers. Foligno is a very physical player, but a player who blends physicality with intelligence and poise. He can rattle off big hits and win battles for pucks along the boards, but he doesn't do so at the expense of his defensive game. He leverages his size and strength to get in the way of his opponents' ability to score, not in the way of his opponents' ability to stand up. He can read and react to plays developing in his own end at an elite level, and is an incredible crease-clearer as a result, able to quickly interrupt plays as they develop and tie up open forwards in front of the net, clearing a lane for his goalie to see the puck. So despite what his stat line might suggest, Foligno is absolutely worth the $2.875MM he makes and is one of the game's best defensive wingers.
