MARCO SCANDELLA - Defenseman - $4MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/28/19
While Scandella has always been a well-respected defenseman, generally regarded as a blueliner capable of anchoring a bottom pairing or filling in on a second pair, analytics have absolutely torched his reputation. Isolated impact metrics show Scandella as a major negative offensive impact and a liability on defense and on special teams. While Scandella's performance isn't quite that bad, as those analytics are a bit dramatic, he still has a few issues. To be fair to Scandella, he does have a heavy, hard shot, and good size, and is able to dig into corners and kill chances. But the issue with Scandella is his skating, and he simply does not have the movement skills to keep up with an increasingly quick NHL. His style of going in and trying to get the puck off of the stick of his opponents can be exposed by speedy forwards, and Scandella has struggled to adapt to a significantly faster league. Injuries have also slowed him down, and he never really seemed like a fit in Buffalo. Given those flaws, Scandella will need to change his approach to defense if he wants to succeed, because as of right now he's a #6 defenseman who needs a coach who's able to diagnose his flaws and play him against lines where he's less likely to get beaten by a fast forward.
