MALCOLM SUBBAN - Goalie - 25 - $.850MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/20/19
The younger brother of P.K. Subban, Malcolm Subban was considered a massive draft bust in Boston. After a star junior career with the now-defunct Belleville Bulls of the OHL, Subban struggled in AHL providence and never was able to cement himself as their consistent #1 goalie. He was waived by the Bruins and claimed by Vegas at the start of the 2017-18 season, and has proven himself a capable, if occasionally inconsistent backup to Marc-Andre Fleury. Subban’s still got some of the upside that made him a star in juniors and a rare goalie 1st round pick, but the inconsistency he’s always showed as a professional still remains, and that inconsistency is his biggest barrier to becoming a legitimate starting goalie. He’s not early-20’s young anymore, but at 25 years old he’s still young for a goalie and there’s still so much upside there. Goalies are notoriously volatile assets and nobody could ever predict what Subban will become, but as of right now he’s a low-end backup goalie (due to his inconsistency) but he has more upside than your typical 20 game net minder. If Fleury ever goes down with a long term injury, (which obviously everyone hopes he doesn’t) Subban will have the opportunity to be everything he was drafted to be, or he could be everything disappointing he’s been since actually being drafted. Realistically, only time will tell.
