MADISON BOWEY - Defenseman - 24 - $1MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/3/19
As a former top prospect, Madison Bowey has thus far disappointed in his brief NHL career. Despite being an elite skater for a defenseman and a natural puck mover, Bowey has been unable to stick in the NHL. Bowey was an elite point producer for WHL Kelowna, and the Kelowna Rockets are known to be an NHL defenseman factory, making Bowey's inconsistency even more disappointing. Bowey has decent size and strength, but he struggles to reliably win board battles and doesn't play with enough tenacity to be an imposing physical force. Also, Bowey sometimes struggles to process the defensive game quick enough and isn't one easily and quickly burst through and interrupt passing lanes. There still is defensive upside for Bowey, but it would depend on him improving his hockey IQ and getting a bit stronger. Offensively, Bowey is incredibly talented but has not put that talent together at the NHL level just yet. Bowey will need to prove he can phase out the mistakes that come from an aggressive, puck moving style in order to stick, and if he can the Red Wings could have a great two-way puck mover on their hands, but if he can't he'll be stuck as a limited, overly-aggressive mistake-prone AAAA option, similar to a Nathan Beaulieu.
