MACKENZIE BLACKWOOD - Goalie - 22 - $.697MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Thanks to Corey Schneider's rampant injury issues and struggles with consistency, MacKenzie Blackwood was finally given an NHL shot in 2018-19, and he performed admirably. On a decently weak Devils team he posted a .918 sv% and a 2.61 GAA, both decent numbers, and had a 5.3 GSAA. Blackwood has done his time at every level of minor hockey, including the ECHL, and is a decently polished product. He moves well, has good vision, and exudes confidence from the net. Defenders know they have a capable goalie behind them when Blackwood plays, and that has value in allowing the defenders in front of Blackwood to be a little bit more aggressive. He has good size and athleticism, and looks to have legitimate #1 goalie upside. Whether or not he gets there is very much still up in the air, as goalies are very volatile assets, but Blackwood has had nothing but success thus far at the NHL level so he does look very promising. I think given the level of success he's had and his talent level, he's at the very least a decent backup goalie, but given that he's only 22 he also has a ton of time to develop and become a franchise goalie. He already has his first 20 starts out of the way, and he looks very much ahead of the curve.
