LUKE GLENDENING - Center - 30 - $1.8MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/3/19
As an undrafted player and a survivor of an ECHL demotion, Luke Glendening has carved himself a nice little career in Detroit. The former Michigan Wolverine has shown a willingness and ability to do anything and everything it takes to stick on an NHL roster, and that dedication and relentlessness has rewarded him with universal love among Red Wings brass and Wings fans. Offensively, Glendening is limited, lacking the skating ability, shooting ability, and playmaking instincts to produce offense consistently, and as a result he's good for ~20 points annually, maximum. Glendening's value isn't reliant on offensive production, though, and those numbers are wholly permissible thanks to the defensive value Glendening brings. Despite not being even six feet tall, Glendening is a non-stop defensive force, bringing a high motor and work ethic to every shift he plays in. He's a willing penalty killer, an elite faceoff taker, and a capable shut down winger. He can handle difficult defensive assignments and grit & grind his way to pucks along the boards. He won't shut down McDavid in a playoff series Ryan Kesler-style, but he can help a team defensively and his isolated impact metrics support this. He's under team control at a cheap price for the next few seasons, so as long as he can stay healthy and mitigate the regression that comes with age, Glendening can be a strong defensive bottom-6 center with elite faceoff abilities.
