LAWRENCE PILUT - Defenseman - 23 - $.925MM Cap Hit - 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/25/19
Another undrafted find by Buffalo, Lawrence Pilut is an incredibly gifted mobile defenseman. He has elite skating, vision, and playmaking instincts. He's adept in transition and can help move the puck in the offensive zone. He's not a lethal shooter but instead is an elite setup man from the blueline and has the upside of a power play QB. He's not an elite defender, and thanks to him being quite undersized he fails to win board battles with any sort of consistency. He's smart enough to have decent positioning and a fine defensive stick, but his lack of physical ability means he likely will never be a shutdown presence and will always need to be sheltered either by his coach or by a defensively strong partner. He scored at a nearly point-per-game pace in the AHL, and has huge offensive upside in the NHL, he'll just need to get stronger on the puck and better learn to utilize his speed to create space with the puck. At this point, he's an elite puck mover that needs to be sheltered with selective ice time on a bottom pairing, making him more of a #6 defenseman than anything, but he has upside to be a high-end offensive #4 defenseman.
