KYLE CLIFFORD - Left Winger - 28 - $1.6MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/22/19
Kyle Clifford is genuinely interesting. At face value, he's a low points, high PIM's grinder, only on an NHL lineup to intimidate opponents and provide 10 minutes of energy-full, physical hockey. This past season, though, Clifford had a career year scoring-wise, posting double digit goals for the first time in his career. The isolated impact analytics paint Clifford as a major plus offensively and a plus player defensively, but obviously the larger body of work in his career as well as the scouting consensus around him would not suggest that that analytical portrayal is accurate. What his film says is that Clifford is a valuable asset on the forecheck and able to provide a decent 10 minutes to his team where he'll stay in front of the net and play responsible defense. His offensive skill and overall abilities with the puck are lacking, so ~20 points is likely his cap, but the isolated impact metrics do paint a picture of a player with some untapped hidden talent, though obviously, those metrics can be flawed in his case, but we need to be honest about what those underlying stats are saying. At this point, Clifford is a good 4th line energy grinder/forechecker.
