KEVIN SHATTENKIRK - Defenseman - 30 - $1.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Given their cap troubles after signing Artemi Panarin and extending Jacob Trouba, Shattenkirk was bought out. Given the leaguewide value that he appears to hold, I think that calling him a #4 in January was a mistake. I think he's more of the type of defenseman who needs to play a rookie season Will Butcher-esque role, where he gets ample offensive chances but is completely sheltered defensively.

The prize of the incredibly weak 2017 UFA class, Shattenkirk has always been considered a high-end offensive defenseman with a weak defensive game. Since breaking out with a 43 point rookie season, Shattenkirk never looked back, and he has not posted below 40 points in any full season he has played in. Despite this high-end offensive production, Shattenkirk's value is lowered by his awful defensive play. His offensive style causes him to sometimes take unnecessary risks and create opposing chances, and when he's pinned into his own end he often looks lost and is unable to effectively kill any opposing offensive attacks. He's best served as the quarterback of the first power play unit and sheltered with a defensive partner on a team's second pairing. With the right usage, Shattenkirk can be a very valuable asset to any NHL team, but given his defensive warts and his tendency to miss games since signing his big contract, Shattenkirk's value isn't exactly soaring.
