KEVIN LABANC - Right Winger - 23 - $1.00MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Despite being a sixth round pick in his draft year, Kevin Labanc has managed to score at every level he's played at. He finished his junior career with two straight 100+ point campaigns, and zoomed through 19 point-per-game tests in the AHL to get to the NHL. He's improved his production every year in the NHL, and finally settled in as a mid-50 point player this past season. Labanc is a genuinely skilled player. He's not the best skater and won't wow you with his incredible size and strength, but he has a unique eye for the puck and incredibly high offensive IQ. He knows what to do with the puck and where to be to do it, and as a result he's a real driver of play as a winger. He isn't strong enough or fast enough to create as much time and space with the puck as he'd probably like, but even without the puck he knows how to leverage his position and his tools into production. He's a good shooter and should score 20 goals with consistency, and his brain allows him to be an elite passing winger. He has legitimate 20+45 potential, and looks like a real first line playmaking winger. Defensively, Labanc isn't the strongest and is far from a defensive plus. He lacks the size and strength to be an asset along the boards, and his defensive mind is behind his offensive IQ. That being said, he can still occasionally pickpocket his way to pucks and create turnovers, so don't dismiss him as a defensive liability just yet. Still, it's offense that will carry Labanc's value and his offense dictates that he's a strong top-6 offensive generator.
