KEITH YANDLE - Defenseman - 32 - $6.35MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 3/7/19
The big fish (on defense) of the 2016 free agent class, Yandle was rewarded with a fat contract to bring his services to Sunrise. Since then, Yandle has continued to give Florida fans 20+ minutes per night of his trademark high-octane, high-risk play. An elite offensive producer from the blueline, Yandle is an excellent puck mover, point shooter, and playmaker, and he can quarterback a powerplay excellently. As a result, he's good for 50 points per year at least with upside for 60. He's near the top of the league in terms of offensive creators that are defenseman. With that offense, though, comes his natural risk taking and defensive warts. He's not an outright liability in his own end, but he's far better when he's taking the puck out of his zone than he is when he's pinned in his own zone and tasked with recovering the puck. Despite those shortcomings, his offensive prowess more than makes up for that, and at this point he is a good #2 defenseman. Obviously, though, with a playstyle that needs him to have speed and superb skating, as he advances into his mid-30's it'll be more and more risky to rely on him for such production.
