KARL ALZNER - Defenseman - 30 - $4.625MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-23
UPDATED 5/17/20
Karl Alzner's time on the Canadiens has taken a bit of an odd turn. His role at the NHL level is mostly unchanged, as he only finds the Bell Centre ice in the case of injury issues, but his overall role in the organization has made him a bit less of a pariah in the eyes of Habs fans. He's a well-regarded leader, mentor, and teammate, and according to young Habs prospects like Josh Brook has done wonders for their development. I'm sure the Habs would probably like to get some of that leadership for less than $4.625MM, but at the very least he's not an absolute negative asset anymore.

Karl Alzner was signed in the 2017 offseason to a long-term contract with the intended role of being a top-4, penalty-killing staple of the Canadiens blueline. Since then, Alzner has massively underperformed compared to those expectations. Alzer is a purely defensive defenseman, and his puck-movement, skating, shooting, and passing all leave much to be desired. His offensive IQ is also sub-par. His defensive play also regressed, as his play style took such a toll on his physical condition that his puck control abilities have massively eroded. His hands are mostly gone, and he struggles to maintain possession of the puck under pressure. At this point, he is best served as a #7, maybe as a #6, but as of the time of writing he is currently buried in AHL Laval due to his inability to carve out a roster spot in a depleted Canadiens defense.
