JUSTIN WILLIAMS - Right Winger - 37 - UFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 7/26/19
"Mr. Game 7" has had quite the career. From winning Stanley Cups with two different franchises to being perhaps the greatest clutch performer (relative to his normally expected regular season production) of the 21st century, Justin Williams could retire this offseason with no regrets. But Williams has always been a fighter, and I think he views his situation in Carolina as needing to finish some unfinished business. Williams proved to be a great fit in Carolina, and he scored 53 points last season. That's legitimate second line production at the age of 37. Quite impressive. His actual skills aren't quite where they were when he scored 76 points over a decade ago, but he's still a legitimate second line two-way winger. Williams is a shifty skater, with excellent puck control abilities and the awareness to be a strong defensive winger. He's not overly physical, but can use his size to win board battles. Isolated impact metrics are high on Williams, showing him to be a strong 5v5 offensive play driver and a good defensive forward as well. Given his age, Williams is difficult to project, as forwards his age can go through rapid midseason decline, but even if Williams regresses a bit, given his value as a leader he'll still find a way to fit in Carolina. Right now, though, he's a well-rounded second line winger.
