JUSTIN SCHULTZ - Defenseman - 29 - $5.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After fizzling out as a top prospect in Edmonton, GM Jim Rutherford acquired Schultz at the 2016 trade deadline, and he proved to be an invaluable cog in their back-to-back Stanley Cup machine. Schultz is an excellent puck moving defenseman, with great offensive tools. He shoots well, as the puck skills to help out a power play, and the vision to be an excellent stretch passer. He's judicious about joining the rush and isn't one to compromise his team's ability to win thanks to his aggressiveness, though he's not mistake free. Defensively, Schultz isn't a high-end blueliner, but his mobility allows him to be an asset with zone exits and his poise makes him a net positive in his own end, even if he isn't a big plus. Durability has been an issue for Schultz, and he only got into 63 games in 2017-18 and only 29 in 2018-19. If he can prove he can stay healthy, Schultz is a fine, offensively focused puck moving #3 defenseman.
