JOSH MORRISSEY - Defenseman - 24 - $6.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2028-2029
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
Josh Morrissey has grown into a crucial defensive cornerstone for the Jets, and the departure of Jacob Trouba underscores that fact. Morrissey had a bit of a slow lift off as a former top prospect, but the Jets' patience is finally paying off, and he's really showing sings of great development. The offensive side of his game has really taken off, as his blend of strong skating, great puck skills, and incredible vision has allowed him to be a premier point producer. His 31 points may not jump off of the page, but he had those 31 points in only 59 games, which is elite production given the sample size. Morrissey has a really high offensive ceiling, and his tools suggest a bright future in that area. Defensively, Morrissey is still improving, but he has come a long way. He's not a physically imposing presence, but he can rattle off some hits and make himself known in the tough areas of the ice. I still question his ability to be a true shutdown force, but with a decent partner he can kill penalties and use his puck moving touch to facilitate zone exits, which boosts his defensive value. As a plus defensive player and a prolific offensive talent, Josh Morrissey is a good #3 defenseman with high-end #2 upside at his peak.
