JOSH LEIVO - Left Winger - 26 - $1.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
After spending years as a Maple Leaf, struggling to find ice time despite enjoying a fanbase that was incredibly optimistic about his upside, Leivo finally got his shot in the NHL, getting traded to Vancouver and finally getting decent ice time there. In Vancouver, Leivo impressed, flashing the genuine upside Leafs fans had been saying he had for years. I'll admit it, I wasn't a massive believer in Leivo. I simply thought he was a decent but replaceable young forward that Toronto saw too much in, but I can safely say I was wrong. Leivo still has to piece together a consistent scoring season in one place, but I'm now very optimistic about his outlook. Leivo is a big winger who's at his best along the boards and in front of the net. His checks all feel very controlled, and he has above-average puck possession abilities. His shot is also decent, and he's good at being able to leverage his size into space to shoot the puck. Leivo has real 20+ goal potential, especially as he gets more power play time, where he's a major asset in front of the net and in the corners digging for pucks. Defensively, Leivo's size and strength allows him to win board battles and block shots, but he's not an elite shutdown winger and doesn't have elite defensive awareness. His physicality makes him a sure defensive plus, but I wouldn't trust him to anchor a penalty kill. Leivo is a strong winger with some real goal scoring upside, and if he can consistently find ice time in Vancouver he could blossom into a second line winger.
