JONATHAN TOEWS

JONATHAN TOEWS - Center - 31 - $10.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024

LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
"Captain Serious" will eventually find himself inside the top 5 of best leaders to ever play hockey, and until this past season many fans were questioning whether Toews was the most overrated player in hockey. All it took was Toews' first point-per-game season, though, to shut those fans up. Toews rode a shooting percentage that rose to his early-career levels to an elite 81 point season, and proved himself to finally have the production to back up his lofty cap hit. Toews has always been an elite two-way force. His defense is among the best in the league for forwards, and he can reliably take on the most difficult defensive assignments and kill the toughest of penalties. He's a true shutdown center, using his size, strength, and insane intelligence to kill chances before they happen. Toews' offense has historically been a bit behind his defense (2018-19 aside) and while he's always had good skating, puck skills, and playmaking instincts, he hasn't been nearly as dominant on that end of the ice. If Toews can use his teammates as effectively as he did this past season and become more of an offensive play driver than he has been in prior years, he can have an early-30's offensive renaissance, but should this production prove to be a flash in the pan, Toews could face those same questions about his inflated reputation he did prior to this season. We won't know which happens until he steps on the ice.
