JONATHAN ERICSSON

JONATHAN ERICSSON - Defenseman - 35 - $4.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021

LAST UPDATED 3/7/19
A 9th round pick in 2002, Ericsson is one of the longest tenured players on the Red Wing’s roster, having debuted during the 2007-2008 season. A solid defensive defenseman who struggles to produce on offense, Ericsson is a viable third pairing option, though his game has been declining. At the peak of his career in the early 2010’s, Ericsson could be a minutes eating, shot-blocking defenseman with good skating for his 6-5 frame, but his game has slowly begun to fall apart. Ericsson is no longer a good skater, and he often struggles with moving the puck. While his defensive awareness is still there, he has become enough of an offensive liability that he can no longer play a lot of minutes a night. For a rebuilding team like the Red Wings, Ericsson is a serviceable third pairing option, though it’s fair to wonder how much longer how much more he has in the tank at 35.
