JONATHAN BERNIER

JONATHAN BERNIER - Goalie - 30 - $3MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022

LAST UPDATED 8/3/19
Formerly one of the NHL’s top goaltending prospects with the Kings, Bernier was never able to perform when earning a regular NHL role despite showing flashes of talent. After playing with the Kings, Bernier was dealt to Toronto for the 2013-2014 season, where he started for the team but was ultimately ineffective. Since playing with Toronto, Bernier has made stops in Anaheim, Colorado, and now Detroit, proving to be a decent but inconsistent “1B starter” option. However, Bernier has been having a rough 2018-2019 season for the Wings, losing starts to Jimmy Howard and posting a save percentage hovering around .900. While he has a track record of being an average to slightly above average goaltender, the Red Wing’s front office has to be somewhat worried as they signed him to a 3-year deal in 2018. Bernier plays a very athletic, quick game, which benefitted him when he was younger, but as he enters the wrong side of 30, there’s a decent chance his game begins to decline earlier than average for a goaltender. Based on his results so far this year, he may already be declining.
