JOHNNY BOYCHUK - Defenseman - 34 - $6MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-23
LAST UPDATED 12/17/18
As a grizzled veteran with a Stanley Cup ring (Boston, 2011), Boychuk has been an incredible asset for the Islanders. At 34, he's not as sharp or as quick as he once was, but he's just as physical. Boychuk plays a bruising, crease-clearing game, and while he isn't much of a factor offensively, he can always be counted on to kill penalties and match up with his opponent's biggest scoring threats. Given his age, his play has steadily declined from its peak, and while he's still certainly a top-4 defensive defenseman, it remains to be seen for how much longer he remains one. Given his bloated contract, Boychuk may prove to be a costly boat anchor weighing down the team's payroll in the later years of the deal. For now, though, he's a veteran top-4 defensive defenseman with a valuable knowledge of the game.
