JOHN TAVARES - Center - 28 - $11MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 8/27/19
John Tavares is a very controversial player, thanks to his free agent departure from the New York Islanders. Scouting is about trying to analyze the subjective qualities of a player in order to better understand how those qualities translate into objective metrics, specifically wins and losses. So I cannot let any personal opinion I may have about his contract decisions get in the way of my analysis of him as a player.
Tavares is one of the game's best offensive centers. Since he was drafted, he's been a complete, self-sufficient offensive engine. Regardless of who he's playing with, Tavares will produce. His skating has come a long way since he was drafted, but it's still not at a high enough level where he can rely on his feet to create time and space with the puck. Instead, it's his incredible puck-possession abilities that make him such a prolific offensive player. When Tavares has the puck on his stick, there are few defenders who can get it away from him. That allows him to have enough time with the puck to set up his teammates, and it's what allows him to be a point-per-game player. Defensively, Tavares is a very capable center and has gotten Selke consideration in the past. He can kill penalties, win faceoffs, and fight for pucks like a real defensive center. His aggressiveness may curb his overall defensive upside, but the safety and stability he brings with the puck on his stick makes him a definite plus defensive player. Overall, Tavares is an elite, complete 1C and a true play-driving offensive engine.
