JOHN KLINGBERG - Defenseman - 27 - $4.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/18/19
Since his phenomenal 40 point rookie effort in 2014-15, John Klingberg has been the best defenseman on the Dallas Stars. While he wasn't fully healthy this past season, he's shown the ability to be one of the league's best offensive defenseman, with the upside to produce nearly 70 points at his best. He's an elite skater with fantastic vision and mistake-limiting offensive tendencies despite his aggressiveness. He's among the best defenseman in the NHL at getting into the rush and contributing on offense, so while he may not be an imposing shutdown force his incredible offensive value makes him one of the NHL's best defensemen. While Klingberg isn't elite defensively, he's smart and he's a strong enough skater to make him valuable in transition, so whereas he may be a liability in the corners or in front of the net fighting battles for pucks he's a major help with zone exits and that's a huge part of defense. He can also kill penalties decently, only adding to his value, although he shouldn't anchor a first PK unit. Given his absolutely incredible levels of offensive production and his high-end offensive tools, as well as his value in transition and his okay defensive value, Klingberg is a legitimate #1 defenseman and one of the top-10 most valuable defensemen in the NHL. The fact that he has a cap hit below $5MM until 2022-2023 is absolutely nuts.
