JOHN HAYDEN - Center - 24 - $.750MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
While John Hayden has above-average size and strength for an NHL player, he simply is not skilled enough to be anything more than a role player at the NHL level. His career track record thus far confirms that. His past two seasons' point production smoothed to an 82 game pace 15 points, which is average fourth line production. Hayden's best trait is his size, and he's able to utilize that size in front of the net and in corners to battle for pucks. He's a physical player and can use his body to his advantage in a grinder role. That being said, Hayden isn't a particularly smart two-way player and should not be killing penalties. Hayden should also keep the puck off of his stick as much as possible, as his complete lack of offensive skill makes him a liability with the puck. There's still value to be had in a versatile, energy-filled grit forward with size, but given how limited his game is Hayden is more fit as a 13F than an actual regular fourth liner.
