JIMMY HOWARD - Goalie - 35 - $5.291MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/4/19
Detroit's starter since 2009-2010, Jimmy Howard has had a fine, if somewhat disappointing NHL career. He's had some excellent seasons where he's led Detroit to the playoffs, but he's also been plagued by inconsistency and his strong seasons haven't ever culminated in a Stanley Cup ring like the efforts of former Red Wings goaltenders' have. Now in his mid-thirties, Howard has settled into his role as the veteran stabilizing force in net for a rebuilding Red Wings squad. Since taking his job back from Petr Mrazek, Howard has posted two decent seasons back to back considering his situation, with sv% marks just around the league average. He's not working with much from a defensive talent perspective, so his numbers are good, but far from the elite numbers he used to post. Howard only has average size, but he's got good instincts and is a calm goalie who squares up to pucks well. He doesn't overly rely on his athleticism, so his abilities shouldn't drop as drastically as he ages even further. That being said, goalies after the age of 35 are a ticking time bomb, adding to the already very volatile state of goaltending in the NHL. Nobody knows how much gas Howard has left in the tank, but even if he begins to regress he should still be serviceable as a veteran backup goalie. As of right now, though, he's an low-end starting goalie.
