JESPER BRATT - Left Winger - 20 - $.749MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
As an undersized recent sixth round pick coming off of a decent but unremarkable season with AIK in Sweden, Jesper Bratt didn't look like someone who'd make the team straight out of training camp in 2017-18. But, after an impressive preseason, he broke camp with the team and stuck, and to this date he still has not yet played in an AHL game. He's a quick player with great burst and on-ice vision, and he brings tremendous energy and skill to every shift he's on. He sometimes struggles to create time and space with the puck because he's not the strongest, and he struggles to score sometimes because he's not the most dominant shooter, but he has legitimate offensive upside. Had his season not been cut to only 51 games, Bratt would have had a legitimate breakout year, as his 33 points in those 51 games is a 53 point pace over 82 games, which is a top-6 total. Bratt's lack of size and aggressive nature means he's sometimes a liability defensively, and he hasn't shown the ability to be able to be relied on in any sort of defensive situation. That will always hurt his value as a player, but I think he's smart enough to recover his defensive standing a bit as he matures. His offense alone makes him a legitimate potential top-6 winger, but until he can stay healthy and prove he can score 50+ points over the course of a full season he's more of a third line scoring winger with tremendous energy and upside rather than a true top 2 line winger. I think he can definitely get there, he just needs to stay healthy and consistent.
