JASON SPEZZA - Center - 36 - $.700MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
This current form of Jason Spezza is very interesting to me. Yes, he's far from what he once was. His sub-30 point production these past two seasons are far from the 90+ point campaigns he used to have in his early twenties. Spezza's foot speed has evaporated and he's now very much a below-average skater. He struggles in transition and his inability to help out on the rush thanks to his lack of speed severely damages his ability to produce at even strength. That being said, Spezza is a sneaky good power play specialist whose lack of speed is not nearly as problematic on the man advantage. Once the power play is set up the same instincts and vision that made Spezza a star in the early 2000's gives him value here. His lack of scoring 5v5 and his lack of real defensive value makes him a tough player to gauge, but I still think that playing him as a 4C power play specialist could yield value to the team employing him, especially if he comes cheap.
