JASON DICKINSON - Center - 24 - $1.5MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/17/19
As former 2013 first round pick, Jason Dickinson has taken the long way to the NHL, and has only established himself as an NHL regular this past season. He was a star for OHL Guelph, and has been a consistent producer for AHL Texas, but struggled in limited NHL action and was unable to carve out his niche in the Dallas lineup. Now 24 years old, Dickinson has finally found his place at the game’s highest level, and he stuck in the NHL lineup for Dallas for 67 games, posting 22 points. That production is underwhelming for a former top draft pick, but it’s also indicative of the successful shift in play style Dickinson has undergone as a professional. Whereas in the OHL Dickinson could rely on his elite strength to create time and space with the puck, he simply is not as dominant at the NHL level as he was at the OHL level, and as a result he cannot rely on those same habits to score points. He can’t plant his skates in the neutral zone and take his time to look for the right pass, nor can he just steamroll his way to the net as he once could. His challenge in adjusting to the professional game has been steadily phasing out those OHL habits. He’s now recognized that his lack of elite puck skills and skating will keep him from being the point-per-game offensive engine he was in the OHL at the NHL level, so he’s used his relentless motor and physicality to carve out a bottom-6 role in the NHL. He provides a lot of energy to a third line and also brings defensive ability along with that. He’s not a shutdown winger, but he’s responsible in his own end and is an asset in transition thanks to his vision and the offensive skill he still has from junior. Going forward, Dickinson profiles as a potential 20+20 middle-6 energy winger.
