JARED SPURGEON

JARED SPURGEON - Defenseman - 29 - $5.18MM Cap Hit - EXTENSION $7.57MM, 8 Years Term

LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Jared Spurgeon is one of the more criminally underrated defensemen in the NHL. He's undersized, and based on looks alone he looks like a Torey Krug-esque offense-only puck moving defenseman. That comparison has some shreds of accuracy, as Spurgeon can help out a power play, move the puck, and score at a high level for a defenseman, (~40 points) but it also completely undersells his defensive ability. Spurgeon is a strong defensive defenseman who can kill penalties and anchor a defensive pairing. He uses his speed and smarts to overcome his lack of size, and he's adept at reading the defensive play and interrupting passing lanes before they truly become a problem. He's a genuine shutdown defenseman and one whose defensive efforts do not garner as much attention as they deserve. He's not the league's best defender nor is he the most skilled offensive player, but he's so well rounded and versatile that he's among the league's top-40 most valuable defensemen. He's a high-end #2 defenseman capable of anchoring a second pairing with a weaker partner or chipping in on the top pairing with another #2.
