As a former first round pick, Jared McCann's offensive development hasn't gone as he probably planned. McCann was a high-end scorer for the OHL Greyhounds, and that level of production hasn't carried over to the NHL level. He can't simply just power his way to the net with the puck like he used to be able to, and changing your entire offensive repertoire to fit the professional game is legitimately challenging. That being said, McCann seems to have fit pretty well in Pittsburgh, and he nearly scored 20 goals last season. McCann is a good shooter with a quick release, but he doesn't often create enough time and space for himself to unleash it. McCann isn't much of a playmaker and isn't an elite skater, so his offensive upside will mostly be carried by his shot and his linemates. Defensively, McCann is quite strong. He's decently big, but he's more importantly quite smart, and he's an effective defender at 5v5. McCann is also a very solid penalty killer thanks to his positioning skills and defensive awareness, though he isn't the strongest at the faceoff dot. Going forward, McCann is a good shoot-first defensive 3C.
