JAMIE OLEKSIAK - Defenseman - 26 - $2.13MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
While Jamie Oleksiak didn't quite develop as Dallas had likely hoped after drafting him in the first round, he's still become a decent defensive defenseman at the NHL level. Oleksiak is one of the league's biggest players, and he's able to use that elite size to be an asset in front of the net and in front of corners. It's very difficult for forwards to get a foothold in the crease when they're battling against Oleksiak, and as a result he's an asset in his own end and especially on the penalty kill where he can set himself up in front of the net and ensure nobody gets prime position in front of his goalie. That being said, Oleksiak is far from the best skater and is prone to getting beat on the rush by speedy forwards, which is likely why he's at his best killing penalties because he's less exposed to odd-man rushes, as opposing power plays typically have very structured breakouts with scripted zone entries. Oleksiak has little to no offensive value, and should not be counted on for anything more than marginal contributions. That being said, Oleksiak, as I mentioned, has legitimate value as a penalty killer and is a capable defensive defenseman. That defensive value makes him a decent #5 defenseman, capable of playing bottom-pairing minutes with another #5, preferably one with speed to make up for Oleksiak's biggest defensive weakness.
