JAMIE McGINN - Left Winger - 30 - $3.33MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 3/7/19
While he definitely isn't the strong power forward who's a 20-goal threat that he was once thought to be, McGinn has provided the Panthers with solid, albeit costly, bottom-6 grit. A naturally strong player, McGinn is an asset along the boards and in front of the net, and can help any line with puck possession purely through his ability to fight for loose pucks. He also possesses the same shot that carried him to 20 goals in 2015-16, and is a threat to score moderately (at a ~12 goal pace or so). He can be parked in front of the net or in the corners on a power play, and while he's far from a skilled player there is still value in those abilities. He's a very physical player, and can be an asset defensively through his ability to tie players up and dig for pucks in the dirty areas of the ice, he's far from a shutdown player and doesn't possess great defensive instincts. Going forward, given his strengths and weaknesses, McGinn is a solid, veteran third-line checker at this point in his career. While there is value in that role, there definitely isn't $3.33MM + term value in that role, making McGinn a slightly negative-value asset.
