JAMES VAN RIEMSDYK - Left Winger - 29 - $7MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Now in his second tour of duty with the Flyers, James Van Riemsdyk has proven himself to be one of hockey's best net-front forwards. He plays a big, powerful game with a great shot. He's easily capable of 30+ goals a season, and is a major asset on the power play in front of the net. He's not a great skater and doesn't have great speed, meaning he's far more of a triggerman than a true play driving winger. He'll help dig for pucks once they're dumped in, but he needs a play-driving linemate to set him up for him to succeed. Defensively, JVR brings physicality and grit, but he isn't great at defensive positioning and won't be able to kill penalties, so he's hardly a plus defensive player. But as long as he's scoring, that doesn't matter, and I think that JVR is still a strong power forward. I worry about how his body will hold up as he ages further, as players who have played such a rough style for so long typically don't age like a fine wine, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the effects of time on JVR myself. As of right now he's a top-6 power forward who specializes in front of the net on a power play.
