JAKE ALLEN - Goalie - 28 - $4.35MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After having a rocky four year grip on the starter's job in St. Louis, Jake Allen found himself sitting on the bench down the stretch, his job taken by new starter Jordan Binnington. Binnington went on to capture the team's first ever Stanley Cup in his first season, and looks to be St. Louis' #1 goalie of the future going forward. So where does this leave Allen? Allen has always been talented, with good athleticism and decent size. The mental side of his game is a bit of a mess, though, and his night-to-night consistency leaves much to be desired. When Allen is on, he can steal games, but when he's off he'll give up soft goals regularly. That kind of nagging inconsistency is simply untenable over a 50+ game sample size, and at 28 years old Allen is simply too old for those inconsistencies to be written away as a product of his relative immaturity as a goalie. Allen is what he is, and he can still give a team good starts, but the team that employs him needs to carefully monitor his workload and his focus. If he plays 30 brilliant games as a 1B starter, a support structure for a young goalie like Binnington, he can rebuild his value, but I hesitate to call him a legitimate franchise goalie anymore.
