JADEN SCHWARTZ - Left Winger - 27 - $5.35MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Jaden Schwartz exploded for the first chunk of the 2017-18 season, scoring nearly every game and cementing himself as an offensive centerpiece of the Blues franchise. Then Schwartz got in some injury trouble, missed time that season, and then suffered through nagging injuries, poor puck luck, and inconsistency this past season to produce only 36 points of offense. I don't think that Schwartz is a 36 point player, but I also don't think he's that dominant point-per-game winger he was for a stretch in 2017-18. Schwartz is a skilled offensive talent with good skating and tremendous burst. He shoots well, fights hard for pucks, and can create time and space for himself with the puck thanks to his skating. Schwartz shoots well and is a good setup man, and is a moderately efficient play driving winger. He's not at the Taylor Hall pseudo-1C level of offensive generation, but he's soundly in the upper middle class of wingers. Defensively, Schwartz isn't as strong. He still brings energy, effort, and intelligence, but he can get lost in coverage and is sometimes too aggressively eager to start a rush, abandoning defensive assignments early to try to get a jump on the defense. Sometimes that aggressiveness bears offensive fruit, but it still makes him weaker defensively. Still, I think that Schwartz is smart enough and tenacious enough to make himself useful in his own end. Given his offensive production and defense, Schwartz is a low-end first line winger with significant upside, but a winger who will need to show more durability and consistency if he wants to clear a spot for himself among the game's elite wingers.
