JACOB TROUBA - Defenseman - 25 - $8MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2026-2027
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
I'm going to be real with you, I'm not a big believer in Trouba's breakout 50 point season as an offensive defenseman. His shooting percentage doubled, but more importantly, he saw the shooting percentages of the players he plays with skyrocket, and as a result he racked up far more assists than usual. That's not to say that I think that Trouba will revert back to scoring the 24 points he scored in 2017-18, but I think that if he does score 50 points again it will be far more about the scoring efficiency of Panarin and the linemates Trouba plays with than Trouba's actual skill himself. Trouba is a great defenseman though, don't get me wrong. He's big, has a decent physical side of his game, and can play generally capable defense in his own end. He's a good skater and has decent puck moving abilities, and his jack-of-all-trades style is valuable. There are very few situations in which Trouba won't make at the very least a somewhat positive impact, and that's a trait that few defensemen have. I don't think he has #1 defenseman upside because I think that he's not an elite defender in his own end and he lacks the offensive tools to be a creator of offense all by himself, but he should settle in as a strong do-it-all #2 and should be the best defensemen the Rangers have had since the departure of Ryan McDonagh.
