JACOB MARKSTROM - Goalie - 29 - $3.66MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
A former top goaltending prospect, Jacob Markstrom struggled to adjust to the NHL. He couldn't cement himself as an NHL regular until landing in Vancouver, and he seized the starting job after the departure of Ryan Miller. Markstrom's best trait has always been his imposing size. Standing six inches above six feet tall, Markstrom covers a lot of net naturally. When he squares up to a shooter, there's little empty room in the net to target, which can throw off shooters who play with their heads down. Markstrom pairs that incredible frame with good athleticism, and he always fights for every save he gets. He's not one to consistently give up big goals, but he can't be counted on to bail out his team in a pinch. He's a solid, dependable backstop that will go as far as his team allows him to, rather than elevating a worse team to another level. Markstrom got some Vezina votes this past season, which confuses me, but I don't want to take away from the man's talent. He's a good goalie, and is a fit as a slightly above-average goalie at his best, but expecting a .920 sv% or a GSAA above 5 regularly would be a mistake.
