JACCOB SLAVIN - Defenseman - 25 - $5.3MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Slavin, a steal as a former fourth round pick, is Carolina's most well-rounded defenseman, and the rock of their defense corps. Slavin has an elite defensive mind, utilizing his incredible instincts to handle high pressure defensive assignments as well as be an effective transitional defenseman. He can be a valuable puck mover, be a triggerman from the point, he can kill penalties, and he can stick up for his teammates in front of the net or along the boards. He's not an elite shutdown piece or a top-flight offensive producer, but he's above-average for a defenseman in both areas, making him overall a more valuable piece than his more one-dimensional teammates in Brett Pesce and Dougie Hamilton. Slavin can be counted on to anchor a top pairing, and given his offensive production and defensive accumen calling him a legitimate #1 defenseman is not out of the question, but unlike someone like Erik Karlsson or Victor Hedman, who can make players like Frederik Claesson or Jake Dotchin look good as their partners, Slavin needs a solid partner to act as a complementary piece to his game, as he isn't as dominant as the true elite #1 defenseman. Slavin, therefore, is more of an elite #2 defenseman/low-end #1 defenseman, but on a defense as talented as Carolina's, Slavin is an incredibly valuable top-pairing defenseman.
