ILYA SOROKIN - Goalie - 23 - Drafted 2014 #78 Overall
LAST UPDATED 1/29/19
Just looking at his save percentage and goals against average, Sorokin looks like one of the best goalies in the world not playing in the NHL. It's a stellar season for any goaltender to post a .920 sv% or above, and Sorokin has not performed below even a .929 since 2014-15. Sorokin's tools are high-end, and he checks all the boxes for a potential #1 in the NHL. He's technically proficient and is developed in a good league where he faces a lot of shots. Unfortunately for Isles fans, though, there are a few caveats with Sorokin's prospect status. First of those is that goaltending is a very dependent position, and Sorokin has been playing on an incredibly high-powered team for his career. In his seasons away from CSKA Moscow, he never posted above a .919 sv%. While save percentage isn't everything, it does raise questions over how Sorokin would perform if asked to elevate weaker teammates, which he does not have to do in Russia. The other question is when or if Sorokin will leave his comfortable surroundings in the KHL. If he does, though, and Sorokin is every bit as good as he was in the KHL, the Isles will have found their goalie of the future. Of course, though, goalies are goalies, so there is always the inherent volatility that comes with prospects playing this position.
