IAN McCOSHEN - Defenseman - 23 - $.700MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED
Whereas his primary competition for ice time in Sunrise, Mackenzie Weegar, is an offensively focused, speedy defenseman, McCoshen is the old school, crease-clearing, tough, stay-at-home option for coach Bob Boughner's bottom pairing. With only 6 career points to his name, McCoshen is obviously not viable as an offensive defenseman. As a result, his upside is limited and unless he can, by some miracle, score at least 25 points, he's at best a Karl Alzner-esque #4. But, given that he relies on his gnarly physical style to survive tough defensive matchups rather than his own innate defensive instincts or strong defensive stick, his true upside in his own end is also limited. As a result, McCoshen, if all goes well, likely has an Erik Gudbranson-level #5 ceiling, but at this point he's very much a Mark Boroweicki-style physical AAAA defenseman.
